Increasing Minnesota lakefront development along with greater recreational use and utilitarian demands on the surface water resources of the State of Minnesota has resulted in the cultural disturbance of aquatic ecosystems. Many aquatic nuisance species thrive where cultural disturbances have created conditions that favor the production of opportunistic and invasive species. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Aquatic Plant Management Program has the statutory responsibility to review permit applications made for the use of aquatic nuisance control products, which have been approved for use by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. The use of these products is absolutely necessary for the control of aquatic nuisance species and mitigation of the impacts associated with cultural disturbance. Failure to properly manage aquatic nuisance species has many adverse impacts on ecosystems and local and regional economies.
